Welcome nature to your open space plan

1.2. Residential vertical garden at Battaramulla, Sri lanka

A house without greenery is a missing the liveliness in it. A Plants wall can do a immensive turnaround in a space to create an impressive atmosphere. This green wall done for a residential client at Battaramulla, Sri Lanka; who loved open spaced modern living witness it best.

The given empty wall has been well-selected by the client in the courtyard intervening the living wall and the kitchen. Plant wall has spread to both sides allowing visibility to living room and the kitchen and has created a perfect flow. And it can be seen that space has been well used without taking too much space in the hall. This living wall has created a bracing experience even when climbing stairs to the next floor by moving away from the traditional painted wall.

We had to try couple of plants to check persistence of the plants even though it looked simply a plant wall.  It was a challenging situation to select plants to different parts of the wall which required different adopting climates. Top of the wall got enough sunlight from the glass roof and the circular glass on the wall which connects the interior with the beautiful outdoor garden. Whereas the middle part got comparatively high sun light and the bottom a very low. And the latter mentioned areas got less air flow and heat too.

Regular maintenance work of the plant made easier with drip irrigation system and drained the excess water from the system to safeguard the floor from water droppings even though there was a gravelled courtyard floor. Bottom part of the green wall got lot of water retained in pots as it took longer time to dry out soil. Therefore we had to make multiple changes in the plant placement to put right plant(s) at its best suit place(s). Apart from the main work a regular maintenance program has offered by the plant partner of ours for twice a month maintenance visits to carried out all the pruning, fertilizing work on the maintenance.

The best thing about this is; client could create a dynamic pattern in the wall by simply changing pot placements while considering the persistence of plants to the particular location. Clients wanted to add colourful plants in the wall with beautiful flowers mixed on and off. As an experiment we have tried out certain flowery plants and colourful plants. Our observation from the project was that it has received a better performance on green colour indoor plants than colourful ones. We are pretty sure you will love to see it in the real context as it an evidence how the  simple things out there in the nature can create a lush and peaceful environment in the middle of a house.
