Dye in your food is not always bad as long as it's this medicinal yellow
Turmeric has
been first used as a dye and then as a folk medicine for its properties. It has
been used in Asia for thousands of years and has contributed to Ayurveda,
Siddha medicine, Unani and Chinese medicine. Also it’s believed in its germ
killing properties in the local context.
Even though
turmeric is a poor fabric dye, it’s commonly used in Indian clothing such as in
sarees & Buddhist monk’s robes. Turmeric paper is used as an indicator in
chemical analysis to test acidity and alkalinity.
Turmeric
with annatto used to colour cheese, yogurt, salad dressing, winter butter and
margarine. Also in canned chicken broths and other foods. It has become a
cheaper option of Saffron. Also it’s used to over- colouring foods like
pickles, mustered. Once used it’s believed to appetite food by improving the
appeal of the food.
It adds
slightly bitter flavour with earthy aroma and taste and is a key
ingredient in many Asian dishes. Turmeric is mostly use in savory dishes but
also in some sweet dishes. Mostly it is used in powder form to receive
golden yellow colour along with its taste. It is used in many food products
such as in canned beverages, biscuits, cereal, baked products, dairy products
as ice cream& yogurt, sauces and gelatin.
Turmeric is
used widely as a spice in South Asian & eastern cooking. In India turmeric
plant leaf is used to steam a special sweet call patoleo. It’s a main
ingredient in curry powders. Even though typically it is used in powder from it
is also used in fresh like ginger. In Africa used to coulor rice, Geelrys by
giving a golden yellow colour. Also its used in Cambodian curry paste which is
used in many Cambodian dishes. In Indonesia and Thailand it’s used in many
curries and in soups. Also it’s used in turmeric latte, a hot drink in south
Asian recipe which is mostly with coconut milk or other non-diary milk.
Turmeric
plant used one of the nine components of Nawapatrika worship which is an
important Durga ritual in eastern India. Haldi ceremony, applying yellow on the
body can be observe during Hindu and Asian Muslim weddings. Also in Tamil &
Telugu marriages the ritual of tying a turmeric tuber as a Thali is practiced
which is similar to wedding ring in western cultures. In western and
coastal India turmeric tuber is tied on the wrists of the couple during
the ceremony call kankanabandhana.
